Computer security is a big worry.  Sheri Coleman of Avir Technology gave us great practical tips to help us all minimize our vulnerability in a digital world of bad actors:
  • We are our own worst enemies.  Don't go clicking on emails from unknown senders or messages from people you do know but that don't seem right.  They carry bad things into your computer.
  • Backup your computer.  Best practice is to save photos and documents to a cloud storage source such as Microsoft One Drive.  Thumb drives fail and are not reliable backup storage devices.
  • Having a good and recent backup is your only real defense against ransom ware.  Even if you pay the ransom and your data is unlocked, the demands will just keep coming to pay again and again.
  • If something bad shows up on your computer screen that you can't get rid of and you find you have lost control of your computer, immediately unplug your computer and its internet connection cable and call an expert.  Response time is important.
  • Rename your wi-fi router.  Don't leave brand name in the source ID such as "Netgear66."  It helps people break into your system if they immediately know the manufacturer.  Use a strong password to log on.
  • Best practice is to have four "go to" passwords and limit their specific use to these general activities.
    • 1 Email - use it for email accounts.
    • 2 Social Media - use for social media accounts and don't use this password for any other purpose.
    • 3 Business - use for any business related things that need a password.
    • 4 Financial - use it only for your financial dealings, make it robust and don't use auto save - always type it in fresh.
Thank  you Sheri for the great presentation.
