Meeting August 13

         Meeting August 13, 2020

David Gamble, Jr., Deputy Public Defender for Washoe County, spoke with us about his experiences growing up Black in Reno, and why he believes Black Lives Matter is an important social movement.  David grew up in Reno, left to attend law school, and returned to Reno.  He is raising his family here (wife and 2 kids) and is deeply invested in our community.

The link to his essay, published in the Reno Gazette Journal and viewed almost 100,000 times on Facebook is:

David indicated he believes race relations in Reno the at the lowest level in his lifetime.  There were questions and conversations with the attendees at the meeting.  When asked what we ask individuals can do, he stated that the strongest anti-racism tool is white people talking to other white people.  It is uncomfortable.  We thank him again for sharing his personal experiences and outlook.  Thank you, Heidi, for introducing us to David.

More at the meeting:

Holly Bromley paid $10 for her 60th birthday and $90 for two amazing family vacations in the Sierras and Yellowstone.  (This was actually from August 6, but the editor forgot...)

Kyle Whaley celebrated an unnamed birthday ($10) in July...

Know Your Rotarian...Heidi Howe

Occupation:  Varied!  Lots of law enforcement (retired 2017 from the Sheriff's Office), car sales, banking, interim CEO Girl Scouts, to name a few...
Family: Born in Oakland, moved to the "back of Lemmon Valley" at age 13.  Mom was a German immigrant (who now owns & operates a hay farm in Oregon) and father built bar equipment.  Currently lives with her husband Bill next to her in-laws.
Rotary:  Heidi joined Rotary because of her father-in-law, John Howe, and because she wanted to hang out with people who weren't cops!
Most fun Rotary memory: All our service projects and Thursty Thursday.
Fun fact: a long unpublishable story about rescuing a young woman from a drunk on the Las Vegas Strip without starting a fight...
