Meeting, July 11

We had a great turnout for Kyle's first meeting, and he sure "rolled with the punches" with his presentation!

Two members, Matt Thurston and Merve Hickok, traded in theoir red badges for blue ones (about time Mr. Vice President!)

We had many visitors, including most of the current Presidents, and sadly, the editor's note-taking skills could not keep up...and Pete Sanborn reminded us of the serendipity of Rotary connections when he revealed that Past Prez Adrienne's guest was married to Pete's father's best friend in Hawaii...

More about the meeting...

- Megan Reese rand the bell in gratitude for being able to buy a 2d home in Walker, CA that backs up to Mill Creek. The house is a wreck, but the acreage--glorious!

- Bodie Monroe paid in advance for a trip to Yellowstone and a float trip on the Madison (and flyfishing, of course)

- Adam Heuer ponied up for a fishing trip (seems to be an RSR theme) at Hobart reservoir with his family, but especially that his son caught his first fish at age 2 1/2. The tradition continues!

- Kent Wood paid for his 49th anniversary, altho he was sad to miss the dinner outing at Mustang Ranch due to illness...

- Alexis Riggs celebrated her 3rd year anniversary of the opening of Orangetheory on July 11.

- Matt Thurston and Merve Hickok paid for the honor of receiving their blue badges

- Merve Hickok honored her husband Michael for receiving an national award for his work on organized crime

- Prez Kyle rang the bell in honor of his family support, especially in the preparation for his first meeting

Prez Kyle highlighted that Reno South Rotary was established on May 12, 1973: he is the 47th President!!

And we sadly said goodbye to our RYE student from Germany, Paula Steig, who thanked her host family for a fabulous year. She gave the best RYE presentation this editor has seen in many a year!

She said the thing most different about school was American participation in sports and other activities--those things are separate from educational institutions in Germany. She enjoyed most fast foods (sorry Mickey D) but will be glad to have some good German cooking when she returns home.

Annual RSR Picnic

Saturday, August 10

We need volunteers to help organize the final details for the picnic (such as arranging the food) Don't assume someone else will do it or you may not have anything to eat! Please help our club and contact President Kyle.

An all-day affair at beautiful Burnt Cedar, a private beach in Incline Village.

Lunch at noon with hamburgers, dogs and maybe brats. Lunch will be your own picnic (there are concessions too) and our traditional bbq dinner at 6:00 - steak and chicken or shrimp. Come for all day or half, whatever your schedule allows. Burnt Cedar has a swimming pool with water slide, kiddie pool, playground, showers, volley ball, fishing and crawdad fishing so bring the kids & grandkids - make a day of it. More details and sign ups to follow.

President Kyle explained why we all received threads to decorate our clothing on his opening day: Individual threads mean nothing--but we are stronger together when our threads are woven into a rope of membership and participation. Our energy builds us and we can accomplish much more for ourselves and our community. But we need ALL of our participation--we can't outsource our talents, and we need to be present to keep our meetings interesting and high quality.

Things change and things stay the same...the price of lunch ($25) includes a "perpetual" raffle ticket. The pot will accumulate week to week--the Thursday winner will draw from Prez Kyle's bag of silver dollars--the one who draws the 1973 silver dollar gets the whole shebang! The weekly winner gets to keep the silver dollar they retrieved from the money bag.

Our new RYE student, Emily Horstein (from Vienna, Austria) has a Galena host family through Thanksgiving. Please consider volunteering to be a second or third host family, or let Dan know of potential families.
