Meeting August 27

Todd Felts
UNR Associate Professor of Strategic Communication

While at UNR, Felts received the 2019 Distinguished Outreach Faculty Award and the Honors Program Distinguished Faculty Award in 2014.

Todd shared with us that upon graduating from high school in North Carolina, a Rotary Scholarship provided him with the funds to purchase much-needed books.  Rotary does indeed help people everywhere!

According to Todd, we are currently in the "Triple-latte of Crises":  a pandemic, ongoing racial crisis and a financial crisis.  He explored ways to understand communications now, and ways to be successful communicating.  Importantly, "it's a dialog" - a process, not a dictation.  His rules in dealing with a crisis, whether as a person or individual, involve PEACE:
  • P  Partner with stakeholders
  • E  Empathize with those affected
  • A  Acknowledge uncertainty
  • C  Consider public Outrage
  • E  Equip a spokesperson (with facts, etc)
Those attending appreciated his dynamic approach, and sharing the "Edelman Trust Barometer."

More at the meeting:

Joel Muller coughed up $50 for a trip with son Ryan to many parts Oregon and northern California, including Bumapss Hell at Lassen and climbing up the mountainside near Crater Lake to the Watchman's Tower at 8,100 feet.  What a way to get 15,000+ steps a day...

Speaking of Joel, look for his tell-all in the "Know Your Rotarian" edition of the RSR Bulletin, coming soon...
