 From the meeting June 4

Al Stavitsky. Ph.D, Dean of the UNR School of Journalism and Center for Advanced Media Studies was in China a few weeks  before alarm bells, and didn't think anything of the shutdowns there.  But...on March 13, UNR faculty and staff learned they had one week (over spring break) to move to an all on-line education environment, where they weren't even allowed on campus! The only staff there are police, facilities, etc.

UNR went from 250 zoom meetings in January to 30,000 in April!  Labs, production and arts classes are still scrambling to provide for students.  A robust web campus platform is still dependent on the faculty, who didn't have much time to learn the system.  Students were disrupted--not just in classes, but housing and jobs.  Many have disappeared from the radar, others are struggling.

Summer session, which is in 2 weeks, will be completely online.  By fall public areas on campus will have lots of plexiglass panels in public areas and labs.  Classes will be 100% on line, with the hope that labs and smaller session can be scheduled with 1/2 the class attending at a time. Dean Al hopes that the lessons of this period will allow us to reimagine higher education..the learning continues...

RSR News

Two local television stations highlighted the Education Alliance announcement it received a $4,000 donation from the Reno South Rotary Club  used to supply Washoe County School District (WCSD) students in need with computers for Distance Learning.

In March, as ordered by the governor, then-Interim Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeill announced that all learning in Washoe County could no longer take place in school district facilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although many students and families have computers to access District-provided online resources, a significant number of students do not have the needed technology at home. The school district has worked to ensure equitable resources for all students by providing paper packets for students. Education Alliance quickly joined forces with ITS Logistics and Reno Cigar Lions Club to collect new and used computers, and donations to purchase laptops in response to the need.

Keeping in touch is important, so let Bob Stewart (rotarystewart@gmail.com) or Jonnie (jonnie.pullman@gmail.com) know of any news so we can put in in the bulletin, which will continue on at least a weekly basis.

Today's smartphones, connected consumer products, apps, social platforms or search engines allow companies and data brokers to collect immense amounts of data about us and our online AND offline behavior. This data is used to create individual and group profiles which companies can use to micro-target us for their products, news or for malevolent purposes. Also, new technology  enables creation of synthetic/artificial images, voices, text. Merve will discuss the ramifications for these and help us avoid them.
