Debi Stears, Collection Development Manager for Washoe County Library System
Debi spoke with RSR during Banned Book Week.  Debi oversees the curation of library materials for the 12 branches of our county library system. 
 
Debi explained that the Washoe County Library System is a public system, and not part of the School District, as many assume.  Libraries provide books, audio book, computer access, meeting spaces and more.
 
The Library System's policy states that all requests for restrictions and removal of books and materials be reviewed recommendations made to the Library director.  His decision may be appealed to the County Commission.  
 

The board of trustees has adopted the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, which states that a library collection should represent the whole of the community it serves.

According to the library’s collection development policy, “a singular obligation of the public library is to reflect within its collection differing points of view.”

There were many questions and much discussion during and after the presentation.

Paying it Forward:
- LaVonne Brooks contributed $22 for her 22 years as a member of the Rotary Club of Reno South.
- Joel Muller contributed $40 for a trip to Chicago (and saw the Cubs!) and Wisconsin, where he boated golfed and had lots of German beer and good food.

October Service Project
Your Board of Directors authorized a donation of $1,000 to the Maui Relief Fund.  Although the Banyan tree survived, there is still an incredible amount of work to do with cleanup, rehousing, feeding people and more.  Please consider a tax-deductible donation.  Information below:
 
Maui Fires Relief Fund
The Rotary Club of Kona was Liz Heiman’s first Rotary club, and Liz has some things to share with us about Hawaii:
  • Insufficient infrastructure to handle disasters of this magnitude
  • Difficulty in sharing resources across islands
  • Hospitals are rural – major injuries usually flown to Oahu or the mainland
  • Limited aircraft to fly patients, families left behind
From her experience, Liz knows all Rotary donations To the Maui Fires Relief Fund will be used for the needs that Maui Rotarians identify, and will fill the gaps that the Food Bank, Red Cross and others can’t supply
 
 
 
 
 
 
The Rotary Club of Reno South has regular meetings on the first and third Thursdays of each month.
Join us at  Swill for the meeting of this Rotary year on Thursday, June 15. The meeting will begin promptly at 4:00 pm. and adjourn at 5:30 p.m.

 Meet Our Youth
 
Students at Galena High School requested Reno South Rotary to sponsor their Interact Club.  They have 2 counselors committed to assist.  Your RSR Board approved the request, and the students will be at our meeting October 19 to introduce themselves and share their plans for the year.
 
In addition, we are inviting a Rotary Youth Exchange student, an Achievement Beyond Obstacles student and a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards student to join us and share how their experiences with these Rotary Programs has affected their lives.
Please come and help the students feel welcome.

October 21 & 22 - Volunteer opportunity to assist UNR: volunteer to judging debate presentations in a "tournament" on campus.  Details soon in a "RSR Service Newsletter".
November 2 - TBD
November 9 - Service project for the month is working at the Food Bank Warehouse.  Details to come.
