March 11, 2019

Yo, Adrienne!

Meeting Notes from 3/7

Speaker: Todd Felts, Ph.D
Topic:  Social Media and Communication

We had a full house to listen to Dr. Felts, UNR's 2019 Distinguished Outreach Professor of the Year!  Dr. Felts has a Rotary history--in 1986 his H.S. English teacher introduced him to the Rotary speech contest--he won a $500 savings bond, which he used to buy his first car.

He explained that while social media has changed the way we think, it  has not changed the way we message--a really good story is the key, as is "staying on message".

Important steps are
 - understanding the issue
 - integrating the message (into just about everything)
 - being an "intentional communicator"

Dr. Felts was a good example of intentional communication, using personal stories to illustrate his message--which ended with a pithy story with the message:  You'll die trying to make everybody happy!

Lucky for us, he promised to come again when he doesn't have to dash off to a class.  Thank you to everyone for coming early to hear a great speaker.

It is tax season. Megan is extremely busy at this time of year and isn't able to be at all of the meetings. We really need people to step up and volunteer to staff the Welcome Table.
