Meeting Notes from 3/21
 
Speaker: Patty Cafferata
Topic:  Founding of Reno
 
Patty has a long history in Northern Nevada, and is also a speaker for Historic Reno Preservation and Nevada Humanities
 
A good crowd enjoyed learning some interesting facts about how Reno got started:
 
- Reno (not known as Reno then), became a known place in 1860, when Billy Fuller obtained a franchise for a toll bridge across the Truckee from the Utah Territory.
 
- Reno became Reno in 1868, named after a Civil War general who was never in Nevada. Railroads named the towns then, and this was the year town sites were auctioned and purchased.
 
- The original Washoe County Courthouse on Virginia Street, designed by Frederek Delongchamps, is actually encased in the current courthouse.
 
- The island of Wingfield Park used to be "Belle Isle", and had a ferry and an amusement park, including a Ferris wheel, etc.  A second island located near Kietzke Land, was as large as a football field.  However, the channel was filled in the 70's,

Family - son Max, UNR and Whitman grad who may be headed to Denver
Why Rotary: she invited herself becasue she heard Rotary offered opportunities for service and she could meet great people

Upcoming Events:
 
March 26 - 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. RSR Board Meeting at Mimi's.  All are Welcome!!!
 
March 27 - 5:30 - 8:30.   Rotary Means Business - meet other Rotarians and business owners and celebrate at Co-Auto, 2155 Dickerson Road, Reno.  Drinks provided and prodigious appetizers from Chuy's Mexican Kitchen.  It will be hard to top this one! Bring a prospective member.
 
March 28 - (Next regular meeting) Dr. Robert Watson talks about Functional Medicine, an introduction to the future of medicine.
The focus and purpose of FM is to get to the root of poor health or disease instead of simply dispensing a medication.  
 
April 4 - Jim Ishoy will tell us about the "Myths of Leadership".
 
April 6 - Club Leadership Assembly will be held at The Nugget, in Sparks, NV. Every member could benefit from this opporttnity to learn more about Rotary and help build the club next year--plus - attendance is free to members with registration on the district website.   It's a great chance to meet other Rotarians and learn something new.

April 11 - Music Contest. Come hear the talented students from Galena High School as they compete in the annual RSR Music Contest.

April 25 - ABO Scholarship Luncheon. Students enrolled in  the Achievement Beyond Obstacles Scholarship Program will deliver their "talks". Please consider being a lunch sponsor.  $175 gives the student a $100 stipend and pays for thier lunch and 2 guests they have invited.  And you get to escort them in!  We need seven sponsors.  (Contact Bodie or Jonnie)

April 27 - Rotarians at Work Day - be ready to roll up your sleeves at Robinhood Park.
 
 
Service Opportunities
 
Wednesday, April 17th at 6PM, Natchez Elementary School will hold a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Night. ASHRAE Northern Nevada Chapter and RSR will partner to offer hands on science for Natchez Elementary School students. RSR volunteers are needed.   Contact Kate Nickolls at 650.279,6769 or kat.nick89519@gmail.com. See robots in action from a partnership between Natchez and Robotics Education & Competition Foundation.  
 
Anyone interested in helping found a new Rotaract Club at UNR please let Prez Adrienne know--it's a good opportunity to be inspired by college students.
 
 
Welcome Table - Please!
 
It is tax season. Megan is extremely busy at this time of year and isn't able to be at all of the meetings. We really need people to step up and volunteer to staff the Welcome Table.
