Meeting September 3

David Archer, CEO and President of NCET: Business. Technology. Events.

NCET is Northern Nevada’s largest educational and networking organization, and a 600+ member-supported 501(c)(3) Nevada nonprofit that produces at least 36 programs and events each year to help people explore business and technology.  NCET has a 30-person working Board and a 10,000 person mailing list.

Currently all events are online, and the web site hosts at least 4 entertaining stories about members and the world of small business each week.  The web site is:

Some interesting facts about small business as Nevada's economic engine:
  • 95% of Nevada's businesses employ 20 people or less
  • 85% of businesses employ 5 people or less
  • 75 % of Nevada's business have 0 employees
Dave shared information about some of the dynamic small and medium-sized businesses  in Northern Nevada, which RSR members can google to learn more about - Bentley, ClickBond (fasteners), Hamilton (ventilators), Dynamic Isolation Systems, Vital Systems (circuit boards), Sports Attack (machines that throw balls, any kind of ball), SonoCine (ultrasound machines), Dragonfly (lithium ion batteries).

TMCC has many programs which support these and other small businesses by providing training at the Pennington Applied Technology Center.  Students completing their certificate programs (sometimes less than 6 months) can make $40-$60,000 per year to start.  Also providing training is Nevada Tech Academy.

Dave also indicated that the best resource for starting a small business is Nevada's Small Business Development Center.  Our program on October 1 will feature
Rodney Jorgensen from SBDC.

After enjoying our smoked ribs and shrimp and veggie skewers, the Rangers told us we needed to put the BBQ out and leave!  So, our indefatigable Rotarians (mainly Kyle and Kent) put out and cleaned up the fire, and we all packed up and moved to the Clewe's fabulous back yard, where we socially distanced while eating steaks and drinking Press's wine.  A good time was had by all, of which only a few are captured by this pic...
