Rotary Theme for January:
Vocational Service

Meeting on January 19

Grant Denton started the karma Box Project as a way to give back after experiencing many years as a drug addict,  and living on the streets for 3 years.   He comes from a broken family, was a high-school dropout, and became a performer on the Las Vegas Strip.  He was recently recognized as a Reno Superhero for his public service.

Grant walked us through the mindset of a an addict and some of his tribulations.  What saved him was time in jail, and books from his granny--especially the one on mindfulness.  He also provided insights into what we can do to help, and told us about Karma Box, where anyone can drop off supplies for those in need.

Isabella, our RYE student, shared that she and her soccer team had donated to Karma
Box, and that she was inspired to service by her grandmother, who helped the homeless and others back home.  Check their Facebook page or use the map for locations.

More about the meeting...

- Lavonne Brooks waxed poetic about the upgraded suite they received in Hawaii after numerous problems with their original room.  And they had a good time as well
- Jason Morris warned us he is headed to the Ruby Mountains to heli-ski.  We are banking on his safe return...with pictures

Two RSR members received their next level Paul Harris pins for their most welcome and needed donations to the Rotary Foundation:
  - Kathleen Nickolls - Paul Harris +6
  - Liz Heiman - Paul Harris +8
Thank you both for your generous support of Rotary and the many people in the world who benefit from Rotary projects.

Georgette Porter was inducted as our newest member!  More information about Georgette in the future--but she has already volunteered to help with Oktoberfest!

We are looking for volunteers for the Oktoberfest Committee.  Oktoberfest has been in limbo due to Covid, and is our major fundraiser.  Please let Bob or Press know if you'd like to help--many hands make light work--we are aiming for mid- to late September.

Don't forget to invite our RYE student Isabella (from Spain) to family and other activities--we are her family while she is here!
