News from October 17 Meeting:

Brent Boynton, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Reno Housing Authority gave us many insights into this quasi-governmental agency.

Brent started out his presentation by stating that he has a connection to Rotary as he was a Junior Rotarian growing up in Texas and won a Rotary scholarship of $250 which made a big difference in his life at the time. The growth and changes we are experiencing in Northern Nevada has made housing an issue and according to media accounts a "housing crunch". The Reno Housing Authority (RHA) has its origins in the Housing Act of 1939 and was created locally in 1943. RHA is currently serving approximately 6,000 individuals living in 4,000 households. In addition, they participate in a number of Federally funded programs such as the Housing Choice Vouchers Program, better known as Section 8 Vouchers. Households with a median  income of less than $22,050 per year can qualify for this program. The problem is that there are huge waiting lists for people to participate in almost every program that the RHA offers. As Federal funding is drying up, the staff at RHA need to develop sustainable public/private partnerships Their primary needs are: money, land and buildings along with civic-minded landlords. Boynton stated that the future for affordable housing in our community is "uncertain" at best.
