Yo, Adrienne!

Meeting Notes from 2/28

Speaker: Carole Klove
Topic: Tournament of Roses Parade

Rotary International has sponsored a float in the Tournament of Roses parade for 40 consecutive years. This year's theme was "Service Rocks" inspired by an Elton John theme as shown above. Next year's theme is "The Power of Hope".

Carole Klove has served on the Board of the Tournament of Roses parade for 30 years. The Board consists of 14 members who are all strictly volunteers. She is also a Paul Harris Fellow through the LA-5 Rotary Club of Los Angeles. The first parade was staged in 1890 using horse drawn carriages covered in flowers and sponsored by the Valley Hunt Club. It was later turned over to the City of Pasadena with their headquarters in the donated Wrigley Mansion. The organization consists of 31 committees who contribute approximately 80,000 hours of volunteer effort throughout the year.

The parade route is 5-1/2 miles with 700,000 spectators along the route. The parade generates 44 million viewers in 57 countries and was streamed live for the first time this year. The parade has never been cancelled due to weather and it has never been held on a Sunday.
