Meeting September 7

Katie Freeman, Manager, Entrepreneurial Development for EDAWN (Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada)

Katie explained the importance of the inaugural Reno Startup Week, September 25-29. this event.  It is designed to expand the area's burgeoning start-up sector, and brings together founders, innovators, dreamers, makers and business owners.  The event lasts for a week and celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit in Northern Nevada: it feature networking sessions, 3 unique tracks of education programming and a variety of free events open to entrepreneurs and innovators in our community.  RSR's own Liz Heiman will present several workshops at the event.

More and more cities and regions are attempting to draw start-ups, and Reno has a leg up in attracting these economic engines.
  _________
More about the meeting:

President Heidi inducted a new member:
  • Lee Hernandez, former member of the Downtown Rotary who is joining RSR to better fit his schedule as CFO of Lumas & Associates and President of Firmament Financial LLC.
President Heidi contributed to RSR's bottom line in celebration of attending the Pleasanton Scottish Games and reacquainting herself and hubby Bill with the Oakland Zoo.

Paul Kaplan, Sparks Rotary President visited for the meeting.

Maui Fires Relief Fund
The Rotary Club of Kona was Liz Heiman’s first club, and Liz has some things to share with us about Hawaii:
  • Insufficient infrastructure to handle disasters of this magnitude
  • Difficulty in sharing resources across islands
  • Hospitals are rural – major injuries usually flown to Oahu or the mainland
  • Limited aircraft to fly patients, families left behind
From her experience, Liz knows all Rotary donations To the Maui Fires Relief Fund will be used for the needs that Maui Rotarians identify, and will fill the gaps that the Food Bank, Red Cross and others can’t supply

The Rotary Club of Reno South has regular meetings on the first and third Thursdays of each month.
Join us at  Swill for the meeting of this Rotary year on Thursday, June 15. The meeting will begin promptly at 4:00 pm. and adjourn at 5:30 p.m.
