Meeting September 21
 
 
 District Governor Stacy Graham
 DG Stacy gave a heartfelt and personal presentation about what Rotary means to her and how we in Rotary create "safe spaces" for each other and support Mental Wellness.  "It's okay not to be okay" is an important point to remember, as well as asking how we are really doing.
 
DG Stacy also presented two awards:
 - Kate Nickolls - The Quiet Rotarian she's always ready to "answer the call', even in the background and
 - Jonnie Pullman - Heart of Rotary award.
and
A Paul Harris +3 to Jason Morris.

- LaVonne Brooks was recognized for a recent trip to Albuquerque, NM to process 50 lbs. of raw green chilis among other things.  
- Liz Heiman - rang the bell for a recent trip to Hawaii, as well as presentations at Reno Start-up Week, her daughter going off to college, her mom's 90th birthday, and for a new Interact Club at Galena H.S. being sponsored by Reno South Rotary. (She's been VERY busy...)
- Jason Morris shared about a two-week family trip to Europe over the summer, an Anniversary, and the purchase of a Rivion SUV vehicle known as "El Cap". (He's been busy too!)
- Kate Nickolls rang the bell for the birth of her first grandchild.
- Jonnie Pullman rang the bell for her birthday on 09/21, and her son Max's new job.
- Bob Stewart rang the bell for recent trips to visit his Dad in Southern California and a trip to Salt Lake City to visit his daughter and grandsons who engaged him in golf cart driving lessons, far more important than the symphony or golf itself...
- Reg Willison rang the bell for for a recent trip to Washington DC, where his son graduated from the FBI Academy for Senior Law Enforcement Personnel. And an anniversary with Shelley. And a new motorcycle.

Kudos to RSR members who earned almost $900 in tips for our club while serving beverages at the last Reno Air Races:  Bob Steward, Kate Nickolls, Georgette porter, Kent Wood and Jonnie Pullman.
 
 
Maui Fires Relief Fund
The Rotary Club of Kona was Liz Heiman’s first club, and Liz has some things to share with us about Hawaii:
  • Insufficient infrastructure to handle disasters of this magnitude
  • Difficulty in sharing resources across islands
  • Hospitals are rural – major injuries usually flown to Oahu or the mainland
  • Limited aircraft to fly patients, families left behind
From her experience, Liz knows all Rotary donations To the Maui Fires Relief Fund will be used for the needs that Maui Rotarians identify, and will fill the gaps that the Food Bank, Red Cross and others can’t supply
 
 
 
 
 
 
The Rotary Club of Reno South has regular meetings on the first and third Thursdays of each month.

What is a banned book, and why do we care?

Debi Stears, Collection Development Manager for Washoe County Library System
Debi oversees the curation of library materials for the 12 branches of our county library system. She grew up in Michigan and earned a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Anthropology (Earlham College) and a Master's of Library Science (University of Pittsburgh).  A lifelong lover of reading, the lure of a life free of overdue fines has turned into a most satisfying career.  In 2011 Debi's husband, Bill Macauley, accepted a position in the English Department and UNR, bringing the family to Reno.  Bill and Debi have 3 grown children and a giant but adorable rescue dog.  In her spare time, Debi enjoys reading, hiking, and planning her next big adventure. Join us for a lively meeting.

Oct 6 District 5190 Rotary Foundation Dinner will be held at the Sparks Nugget - Chalet Terrace Room $65 per person. Cocktails at 5:30 pm followed by dinner at 6:30 pm.  
Oct 7 - Rotary In Action - District Leadership Team will provide you with many resources and tools in the areas of Membership, The Rotary Foundation, making your club meetings fun, attracting new members, getting involved with Rotary Youth Exchange and so much more. Including meeting Rotarians from all over.

Speaking of books - 11 RSR members and supporters cleaned "lots" of books so that Share the Word can distribute them to students in Washoe County who do not have any.  More info about this later...
