Kristopher Dahir, Sparks City Councilman, shared his insights on a number of regional projects driving growth in the Reno-Sparks community along with an update on the Nevada Veterans Memorial. He noted that Rotary is a good example of service in turbulent times, and contributes in many ways to meet the challenges in our community.

Councilman Dahir has a M.A. in Strategic Leadership, and has been using his knowledge on several fronts, including the Community Homeless Advisory Board, which is beginning to coordinate all the groups in the community providing services  to the homeless. Then strategic decisions can be made to actually work toward solving problems.  He reminded us that there were 800+ homeless students in the School District.  He noted that until new construction for apartments and houses  is completed and  on the market, things will continue to be "interesting".

The Southwest Connector is having its Grand Opening on July 7!  It will help alleviate some of the horrendous traffic on highways 395/80 in that 60,000 trips a day will use this route instead of the "spaghetti bowl".  This interchange is undergoing some long term planning which may affect the airport access.  Both of these projects are important to our economic well-being.

Last but not least, the Nevada Veteran's Memorial will hopefully break ground soon at the Sparks Marina.  It will not only honor Nevada Veterans, but will provide historical context for students.  For more information, including a comprehensive video, go to http://www.nevadaveteransmemorial.org

RSR Driver Needed!!
Officially adopted by Rotary International in 1971, RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is one of the most significant and fastest growing programs of Rotary service. Districts 5180 and 5190 co-locate their camps at Grizzly Ranch in Portola, where students stay for a week of intensive leadership experience. This year, Reno South Rotary is sponsoring 3 students. RSR needs a volunteer to pick-up our 3 students Friday, June 22nd at 1 p.m. from Grizzly Creek Ranch near Portola, CA and transport them to one location in south Reno where their parents will take charge.  Please call/text or email Jason at   jmorris@woodburnandwedge.com or 775.343.2429
