April 1:  Alexis Hill, Washoe County Commissioner - What Can We Do About the Homelessness in Our Community?

Elected in 2020 as Washoe County Commissioner for District 1, Alexis Hill is passionate about ensuring that local government improves community members’ lives. Alexis grew up Sparks lived in northern Nevada most of her life. She has substantial experience in public policy and city planning  and worked in the nonprofit sector at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and at Kids & Horses, a nonprofit for special needs children and adults. She holds a political science bachelors degree from Texas A&M and a graduate degree from UNR in public administration and policy.

Commissioner Hill updated us on the many new initiatives to address our communities' homeless problem, including (but not all of the info):
  • Our Place - a women & children's center for 138 women and 37 families
  • The need and planning for a living facility to address mental health care for women and children
  • The new CARES center at the Spaghetti Bowl, built by all 3 local governments with Covid grants and other funding.  It will include a safe camping area, a place for pets and wrap around services
  • Operated by Volunteers of America and Washoe County taking the lead for the Continuum of Care
  • Closing the facility on 4th Street
This barely skims the surface of information.  Alexis was kind enough to send the power point--so if you are interested, let me know and I will forward it in PDF form.
